Description

While innovations associated with HDD capacities, SSD performance, latency, bandwidth, and throughput advancements dominate HPC storage-related investments and headlines, tape-based storage solutions remain a critical part of data center storage architectures. Tape continues to be utilized at roughly half of the sites surveyed, with average tape capacity at those sites being approximately 2.5x greater than average disk (both HDD and SSD) capacity across all surveyed sites. This data is from an annual study which is part of the eighth edition of Hyperion Research’s high-performance computing (HPC) end-user-based tracking of the HPC marketplace. It included 181 HPC end-user sites with 3,830 HPC systems.

A Look at the EU’s Four Pillar Strategy for Leadership in HPC

Mark Nossokoff, Steve Conway, Earl Joseph

High performance computers (HPCs) are recognized globally as fundamental tools for conducting R&D, innovation and advancing the economic competitiveness of nations. More countries than ever are increasing their spending on HPC infrastructure and critical associated areas such as AI, cloud, quantum computing, applications development and optimization, and workforce development and retention. The European Commission (EC), through the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU), Digital Europe Programme (DEP), and Horizon 2020/Europe funding programs, fully recognized this criticality for the European Union (EU) to fortify its global HPC leadership position. Further refining and extending its initial long-term mission, the JU has instituted a Four Pillar Strategy focusing on Infrastructure, Technologies, Applications, and Take-Up and Skill Sets, to define an approach to help realize its HPC ambitions. Continued execution of this strategy should well-position the EU to achieve its goals of deploying an integrated world-class supercomputing and data infrastructure.

Hyperion Research Study Quantifies Use of HPC Economically Important AI Applications

Steve Conway, Alex Norton, Earl Joseph

Several years ago, anecdotal evidence led Hyperion Research to compile a list of applications that promised to be the most economically important HPC-enabled AI use cases. Rather than simply drawing attention as interesting one-off examples, these applications had emerged as repetitive AI workloads that vendors could begin to pursue as emerging market segments. Hyperion Research's recently completed multi-client study of the worldwide HPC market presented a direct opportunity to ask HPC user organizations whether they use or plan to use any of the economically important HPC-enabled AI applications.
